Brigitte Vasallo

Brigitte Vasallo* was born in Barcelona in 1973. Coming from a poor, rural background and without a university education, the writer, teacher and social activist has worked in a variety of jobs, including cleaning, chambermaid and sailor. Her work is dedicated to investigating forms of otherness, with a special interest in sexual difference and national construction, topics on which she has written books that have been translated into several languages and which have earned her invitations to teach at universities that would not accept her as a student. In Brazil, she has published Monogamous Mind, Polyamorous Terror, (Elefante, 2022), a historical investigation on the centrality of monogamy in amorous constructions. By studying these imposition mechanisms, Brigitte Vasallo proposes a conceptualization of monogamous thought, introducing the topic from a feminist, anti-racist and anti-LGBTphobic perspective. The discussion is accompanied by a personal account by the author, marked by romantic experiences and failures, which shape a literary elaboration capable of expanding the theoretical field and addressing real experiences.
